Conversation starters for strangers: what to say after hello
By Anonymous Chat · Reviewed
Start with a greeting and one question that is easy to answer without sharing personal information. “Hi! What is a small thing that made your day better?” gives someone a place to begin. Choose a question you actually want to answer too. These examples are for adults chatting with other adults; no opening line guarantees a reply.

Keep the first message short and specific
A random text chat starts without the context of a profile or a shared event. Give the other person something small to respond to: a recommendation, a preference, or an ordinary part of their day. One question is enough; sending five at once can make the exchange feel like a questionnaire.
Try “Hi! I am looking for something relaxing to listen to. Any suggestions?” You have shared a little about your mood and asked for an idea, without requesting a name, location, or contact details. Change the wording so it sounds like you.
Easy opening questions for a casual chat
Pick one of these when you want an ordinary conversation. If the other person seems unsure, give your own answer rather than immediately asking another question.
- What is one small thing you enjoyed today?
- What is your favourite way to spend an evening with no plans?
- Are you in the mood for a light chat or a more thoughtful question?
- What is something you tried recently and would try again?
Ask for a recommendation you can talk about
Recommendations give you a topic to explore without needing to share the same favourites. You can be curious about why they like something, even if you have never heard of it. Avoid turning an unfamiliar choice into a test of their taste.
- Which song would you put on for a quiet evening?
- What is a film you would happily watch again?
- Is there a game you enjoy even when you only have twenty minutes?
- What book, podcast, or channel have you enjoyed lately?
Try a playful choice without getting too personal
A small imaginary choice can be useful if neither of you wants to talk about your day. Keep it optional and let the answer lead somewhere; there is no correct response.
- Would you rather learn to draw or play an instrument?
- If you could add one extra hour to your day, how would you use it?
- Would you choose a cosy café or a walk in nature for a free afternoon?
- What ordinary skill would you like to be surprisingly good at?
Turn an opening question into a real exchange
Follow one detail from the answer and contribute something of your own. You do not need to ask for a biography or jump to a new subject after every message. This invented exchange shows the first few turns, rather than a script to copy word for word.
- You: “Hi! What helps you switch off after a busy day?”
- Stranger: “Usually cooking.”
- You: “I like simple meals when I am tired. Do you follow recipes or make things up?”
- Stranger: “Make things up. Sometimes that is a mistake.”
- You: “Same here — my improvised sauces are a gamble. What is something you can make without thinking?”
If the reply is short, make room instead of pushing
“Music” or “nothing much” leaves you with little context, but it does not tell you why the person is brief. They may be distracted, choosing their words, or uninterested. Try one gentle follow-up, such as “More of a calm playlist or something energetic?” and share your own preference.
If they still do not engage, change the subject once or leave politely. Silence is not an invitation to send repeated greetings or demand an explanation. There is no fixed waiting time that makes a reply due. “I will head off now. Take care!” is enough.
Keep introductions comfortable and private
Skip requests for an exact age, address, workplace, photos, or social accounts as an opening. Avoid sexual questions, insults disguised as jokes, and challenges to prove who someone is. Being in an adult chat does not mean someone agrees to flirting or personal questions.
If you are nervous, you can say “I am not great at first messages, but I would enjoy a chat.” You do not need to apologise repeatedly or impress someone with a clever line. Respect a refusal, and end the conversation if your own boundaries are ignored.
Choose one question and try it in text
Anonymous Chat connects adults aged 18 and over in one-to-one text conversations without registration. Start a chat, greet the person, and choose one question that fits your mood. Specific hobbies are topics to discover in your messages, not a guarantee that the service will match you with someone who shares them.
You can keep the exchange in text and decide when to stop. You do not owe anyone contact details or another conversation. A brief friendly exchange is a reasonable outcome too.
Before you start on Anonymous Chat
The current search uses mutual gender preferences and excludes blocked or recently skipped sessions. The form also offers age, language, category and roleplay choices, but those additional choices currently do not filter matches. Ask your partner what language and subject suit you both; a stated age is not verified.
Choose one opening question, listen to the answer, and share a little of your own perspective. The aim is to give two people room to talk, with no pressure to reply, reveal personal details, or keep going.
